Pedestrians and cyclists can move into the nearside area of the truck when they stop at a road junction directly next to the truck. In that position it is difficult for the driver to see them – and today he has keep an eye on a total of six mirrors and look out of the windows too. Sometimes the truck's swerving to the offside before actually turning off is misinterpreted – even though the driver has used the direction indicator properly. In this way difficult situations arise again and again, and occasionally serious accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists occur too. This system warns the driver when he may possibly overlook a weak road user, in particular a cyclist, on his nearside. With the help of sensors the area around the cab is monitored when the truck stops and the distance up to any objects in this area is determined. When objects or persons approach the vehicle from behind on the nearside this information is shown via symbols in the two outside mirrors. An additional acoustic warning is given as the vehicle turns when the steering wheel has reached a certain angle and objects are still in the close range of the two front sensors. The tests carried out in real road traffic during the advance development stage yielded extremely positive results, the test drivers finding the system to be great help in potentially critical turn-off situations. MAN Nutzfahrzeuge then presented the turn-off assistant at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2006 in Hanover to gauge the market acceptance for such a system. The response from the specialist public was extremely positive, and so in 2007 further development of the system up to series-production maturity began. The MAN turn-off assistant will be introduced as a series feature in MAN trucks in the course of next year. Two awards from ADAC The German motor club ADAC recognizes the commitment to enhanced road safety. In addition to the Mobility Prize 2007 MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has also won the “Yellow Angel” 2009 for its turn-off assistant. The jury gave 2nd prize to the electronic turn-off assistant for trucks in the “Innovation and environment” category. The MAN Turn-off Assistant Function The MAN turn-off assistant warns the driver when he may possibly overlook a weak road user, in particular a cyclist, on his nearside. Externally a truck fitted with a Turn-off Assistant / Proximity Alert System can be recognised by several small ultrasonic sensors distributed over the front and nearside area of the vehicle. With these sensors the area around the cab – within a radius of about two metres – is measured when the truck stops, for example at a road junction or traffic lights, and the distance up to any objects in this area is determined. These data are saved in a computer. If a pedestrian or cyclist, for example, approaches the truck while it is stationary, the sensors calculate a new shorter distance. If the cyclist or pedestrian comes within a set distance the truck driver is warned by a visual signal. In this way the Turn-off Assistant draws the driver's attention to a change in the situation in the danger area before he actually moves off again. If the driver wants to move off although an object or person is still in the danger area near his truck, he is given a second warning of the risk of collision, this time an acoustic one. ESP – electronic stability program Variables for the electronic stability program ESP A system for controlling ride dynamics If a vehicle threatens to tip over or to skid, the driver has to recognise the danger fast and react immediately to bring the vehicle under control again. ESP constantly monitors the ride dynamics of the vehicle and intervenes automatically using the engine management and brake systems if the vehicle is in danger of tipping over or skidding. It is therefore able to estimate the situation quicker than even the most experienced driver and to keep the vehicle under control within the limits of physics. Typical accident constellations such as cornering too fast, slippery roads, emergency braking and hectic evasion manoeuvres can be defused and the accident risk reduced. Effect of ESP on a slalom without ESP course Engine technology of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group more Adaptive cruise control Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Safety and comfortable operation through distance-related driving speed control Speed is often underestimated and the distance to the vehicle in front easily overestimated. The ACC system is able to automatically adjust the driving speed as well as the distance to the vehicle ahead in accordance with the pre-settings. It can be used from a speed of 25 km/h onwards. Its main field of application, however, is in driving on main roads and motorways. Function and operation The ACC radar sensor with a range of approx. 150 m recognises the distance to and the relative speed of the vehicles in front in the same lane. The ACC control unit calculates the best approach strategy from the sensor data, the course of the lane, the speed of its own vehicle and the actions of the driver and triggers the engine torque and brake management system (retarder and service brake) accordingly. The road speed, acceleration and retardation of the vehicle are actively regulated and the distance to the vehicle ahead is maintained. ACC is operated as before from the cruise control lever. It is also possible to set the target distance according to the driver's wishes. The pre-set value is the 50 m stipulated by law in Germany. The driver retains full responsibility for his vehicle and can override the ACC system at any time with the accelerator pedal. If he actuates the brake pedal / retarder lever, the system is switched off. The radar sensor is positioned inconspicuously at the front of the vehicle. the tyre pressure Greater safety in transport The tyre pressure monitoring system visualises the frequent slow loss of pressure in tyres before damage can occur. This continuous monitoring of the pressure helps to prevent about 99 % of all tyre damage. Function and operation With TPM every wheel is equipped with a pressure sensor. These sensors determine the momentary tyre pressure via the tyre valve and transmit the pressure values by radio to the control unit, which is fixed to the frame. These values are then displayed in the main instrument via the CAN bus. A check lamp also comes on if the pressure falls below the minimum permissible value. TPM permanently checks the tyre pressure LGS – lane guard system Lane Guard System (LGS) Greater safety in traffic thanks to lane monitoring On long and monotonous routes or during nighttime driving the driver's attention sometimes wanes – or he may even fall asleep for a second. The lane guard system (LGS) monitors whether the vehicle stays correctly in lane, thus ensuring greater safety and driving comfort. If the vehicle leaves its lane without the driver having actuated the direction indicators an acoustic signal sounds to warn the driver. Function and operation A video camera behind the windscreen records the lane markings and vehicle's position in respect of the lane markings. If the vehicle crosses the lane markings the driver is warned by the sound of "rattling nails" from a loudspeaker near the right-hand or left-hand door, depending on which lane marking has been crossed. The system activates itself automatically at speeds over 60 km/h and can be deactivated via a rocker switch. At speeds below 75 km/h the warning is sounded when the vehicle reaches the inner lane marking and above 75 km/h at the outer lane marking. If no warnings can be given, e.g. because there are no lane markings, the driver is informed accordingly by means of a check lamp or by the Highline display. Continuous damping control Continuous Damping Control (CDC) The MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group develops intelligent systems which protect driver, passengers, vehicle and road and also guarantee a very high level of safety. One of these is electronic control of the shock absorbers called Continuous Damping Control (CDC) in trucks or Comfort Drive Suspension (CDS) in buses from NEOPLAN and MAN. Both systems are based on the new generation of air-suspension systems ECAS2 (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) and modified dampers. Intelligent damping in all situations Continuous Damping Control (CDC) calculates all forces required from the shock absorbers as a function of the vehicle load and the nature of the road. It does this for braking and accelerating, on bends or on gradients. A control unit, the system's brain, electro magnetically regulates a proportional value which determines the flow rate of the oil in the damper. If, for example, the valve is under a higher voltage, the opening in the damper is made smaller. The oil flows more slowly and the damping is "harder". The system calculates and regulates the damping force every 25 milliseconds and thus constantly reads the entire driving situation. Height and pressure sensors in the vehicle supply the data for the calculations. The CAN bus also supplies the damper control system with information

road speed, retardation or acceleration signals, lateral acceleration and wheel speed are all included in the precise calculations. In just fractions of a second the CDC adjusts a basic damping applying in normal conditions to the new circumstances. Normal damping can be varied in two stages, which the driver can conveniently select at a rocker switch. In a truck, for example, the centre of gravity can be optimised to achieve high-load stabilisation or roll stabilisation. In a coach the system meets the special demands for comfort or adjusts itself to the load. This dynamic stabilisation has further advantages

CDC reduces the tyre wear and protects the roads. High safety means more favourable insurance CDC tends to shorten the braking distance, the steering reacts in a more direct manner and the vehicle is comfortable and easy to operate. Even in serious situations it helps the driver to remain fully in control. A truck with CDC ensures a high level of safety. Some insurance companies are so convinced of the benefits of this system that they want to offer cheaper policies. In trucks in particular, where loads and centres of gravity vary so much, stabilisation of vehicle roll is a real benefit for stability, cornering and safety. The load and the vehicle are protected, the service life of the components is considerably increased and the risk of accident significantly reduced. Press release

highly developed electronic systems for improving safety and comfort MAN BrakeMatic The intelligent MAN BrakeMatic?, with its Electronic Braking System (EBS), Anti-Locking Braking System (ABS) and powerful disc brakes on all wheels or hub brakes on AP axles, simply stands for superb braking. BrakeMatic makes sure the Trucknology range gains that decisive meter when braking – for the safety of all road users. MAN EVB as standard equipment in the Trucknology series, the MAN EVB (Exhaust Valve Brake) enables powerful, wear-free braking and controlled downhill driving at high speeds with up to 290 kW of braking power. The engine brake increases braking performance by briefly opening the exhaust valve. Further development has resulted in the pressure-controlled EVBec for D28 engines. This makes an even greater braking moment available at lower speeds. MAN EVBec The EVBec extends the normal EVB function to enable continuously variable brake output. This is achieved by regulating the exhaust back-pressure with the butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe. The air-actuated engine brake valve closes the exhaust pipe in a step less process depending on the desired brake output, thus generating the exhaust back-pressure required for the cylinders. The vehicle management computer (FFR) measures the current exhaust back-pressure from a sensor and uses a proportional valve to ensure that the servo-cylinder is accordingly triggered by pressure. Graduated activation of the sustained-action braking system permits it to be precisely dosed when driving, resulting in gentle, smooth braking. Multifuncti on steering wheel Multifunction steering wheel With increasing traffic density, the demands placed on truck drivers have risen. The new operating concept from MAN enables the driver in concentrate fully on the traffic. The driver can use the multifunction steering wheel to operate the cruise control and 'brakeomat', as well as the wheel/CD, without having to take a hand off the steering wheel. A major component in this new product feature is the central display in the cockpit, which displays the selected functions. At a glance, the vehicle driver is given the most important information required for an economical driving style. Unlike conventional retarder systems, the MAN PriTarder? uses water from the engine's cooling circuit and doubles motor braking performance. With braking power of up to 600 kW, which is almost constantly available in a speed range between 10 and 90 km/h, MAN's maintenance-free PriTarder? is not only an additional safety component, but also enables higher average speeds. A further advantage of the MAN PriTarder? is the doubling of brake lining service life. The characteristics of MAN's PriTarder? make it especially beneficial for vehicles involved in local transport or construction, normally areas in which only lower or medium speeds are driven. In addition, because it is approximately 40 kilograms lighter than conventional oil retarder systems, it is very suitable for use in load-intensive tank silo transport. MAN TipMatic Driving as economically as possible depends on shifting at just the right moment. This is most easily and comfortably done with MAN's TipMatic?, which enables either fully automatic or manual operation using the TipMatic? lever. If the optional engine brake EVB is employed, the automatic gearbox shifts independently to the optimal gear to provide full braking power. This greatly relieves the strain on drivers involved in distribution traffic where more frequent is required. Drivers can concentrate on traffic - a clear safety plus. In addition, MAN's TipMatic? makes vehicle operation more economical by reducing fuel consumption and preventing damage to the drive train. Simply accelerate, steer and brake - when loading, the driver operates the halt brake located in the control box in the nearside armrest, and neutral gear via pushbutton. Neutral activates the body hydraulics. Compared to automatic gearboxes, the advantages of this new series solution are its reduced fuel consumption and lower component costs. More comfort and safety in off-road use – MAN TipMatic? with cross-country drive We now introduce a new symbol on the rotary control of MAN's automatic TipMatic? gearbox for the TGX and TGS

Dx stands for the cross-country drive mode, specially tailored for driving on construction sites. MAN is also introducing a TipMatic variant for TGX and TGS all-wheel drive vehicles with 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 driveline concepts and Euro 4 D20 Common Rail engines that make comfortable, automatic driving also possible for demanding off-road driving. When driving on hard road surfaces using position D of the TipMatic? lever, the driver benefits from the advantages of automatic gear selection. In demanding off-road situations, the driver switches to the Dx position. Shifting is avoided as much as possible to guarantee power on sand, in mud or on hills. If shifting is needed however, the gearbox carries this process out rapidly and based on its calculation of the driving resistance. The gearbox selects the most practical gear for starting, one with high engine torque, and maintains this gear as long as possible. This ingenious yet simple, robust and maintenance-friendly technology compares extremely favourably with the conventional rear-wheel drive in terms of fuel consumption and wear, and offers a range of advantages over the classic all-wheel drive.The distributor gearbox, a typical feature of the classic all-wheel drive, is no longer required where hydrostatic wheel drives are used. In addition, with MAN HydroDrive? only the rear wheels are powered in road traffic, and no friction is produced by the hydropumps and wheel motors.
